1. The Indian stent market here is on a healthy growth track despite price caps. In 2018 calendar year the overall Indian cardiac stent market grew by 16-18 per cent in terms of volumes. Prices of coronary stents were capped in February 2017 (prices were slashed by nearly 80 per cent). In terms of value, thus, the growth is 4-6 per cent.

Kerala boy, 6, dies after being diagnosed with rare disease: Kozhikode: A six-year-old boy, who was being treated for West Nile Virus (WNV) disease in the south Indian state of Kerala, died on Monday, said Kerala Health Minister K.K. Shailaja. Following doubts of WNV, the Centre had dispatched a multi-disciplinary team from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to assess the spread of WNV in Kerala. West Nile fever is spread by Culex mosquitoes and the infection could be confirmed only if the second samples tests positive. Its time to do the mosquito surgical strikes around the mosquito breeding areas. Will it be done?
3. A California jury on Wednesday awarded $29 million to a woman who said that asbestos in Johnson & Johnson’s talcum-powder-based products caused her cancer. The verdict, in California Superior Court in Oakland, marks the latest defeat for the healthcare conglomerate facing more than 13,000 talc-related lawsuits nationwide.

CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS LINKED TO DEMENTIA RISK IN WOMEN WITH STROKE

Calcium supplements may be associated with an increased risk of dementia in older women who have had a stroke or other signs of cerebrovascular disease. The research is published in the August 17, 2016, online issue of Neurology.

Because calcium deficiency contributes to osteoporosis, daily calcium intake of 1000 to 1200 mg is recommended.

The study involved 700 dementia-free women between the ages of 70 and 92 who were followed for five years. A total of 98 women were taking calcium supplements at the start of the study and 54 women had already experienced a stroke. During the study, 54 more women had strokes, and 59 women developed dementia. Among the women who had CT scans, 71 percent had lesions on their brains’ white matter, which is a marker for cerebrovascular disease. The study found that the women who were treated with calcium supplements were twice as likely to develop dementia than women who did not take supplements.

But when the researchers further analyzed the data, they found that the increased risk was only among women with cerebrovascular disease. Women with a history of stroke who took supplements had a nearly seven times increased risk of developing dementia than women with a history of stroke who did not take calcium supplements.

Women with white matter lesions who took supplements were three times as likely to develop dementia as women who had white matter lesions and did not take supplements. Women without a history of stroke or women without white matter lesions had no increased risk when taking calcium supplements.

Youth declared dead found alive

DECCAN CHRONICLE: A youth declared dead by the doctor at a state-run hospital in Odisha, woke up before post-mortem. The incident was reported from Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital.

According to reports, the youth Sujit Khatua, 25, of Khatuapatna village under Dhusuri police limits was admitted to the Bhadrak hospital in an unconscious state on Saturday night.

Following medical examination, Dr Karunakar Rout declared him dead and referred for the post-mortem scheduled on Sunday morning.

However, the dead man was found moving his hands, legs and eyes before the post-mortem began. He was immediately shifted for treatment.
