6-Year-Old in Kerala Dies of West Nile Virus, Contracted Through Mosquito

KOZHIKODE, KERALA: A six-year-old boy, who was undergoing treatment for vector-borne West Nile fever, died in Kozhikode on Monday. Kerala Health Minister KK Shylaja said there was no need to panic and steps were being taken to prevent the spread of virus. The boy, hailing from neighbouring Malappuram district, was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital a week ago after he tested positive for the virus. There had been a case of West Nile fever last year in Kozhikode, which was confirmed by the Manipal Centre for Virus Research.

Is it an epidemic: The first case is always the most important for public health. It is the contact case and requires all preparations like an epidemic threat. We must find the source of the mosquito and do massive anti mosquito drive all around within hours. If no anti mosquito surgical strike is done in time the disease is allowed to spread, it can spread pan India as Culex mosquito is present everywhere.
