World Hypertension Day is observed every year on May 17th in order to raise awareness and promote hypertension prevention, detection and control.

The theme for this year is "Know your numbers". Its purpose is to raise awareness globally about the importance of knowing what is your blood pressure measurement.

The Pan American Health Organization joins the global community to mark World Hypertension Day in order to contribute to the prevention and control of high blood pressure.

HEARTS is an initiative led by the World Health Organization involving various global actors, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States (CDC) and the Initiative Resolve to Save Lives, the International Society of Hypertension and Nephrology, the World Hypertension League and World Federations of Diabetes and Heart. The Department of non-communicable diseases and mental health of PAHO coordinates HEARTS in the Americas which disseminates best practices for the prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases to have a positive impact on the attributable burden of these diseases and move towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030. (PAHO)
