A new study published in Cytokine compared the histopathology of renal fibrosis as well as pro fibrotic transforming growth factor TGF 946 signaling in wild type WT and interleukin IL 17 knock out IL 17 mice. This study aimed to investigate the possible mechanisms involved in the exacerbated renal fibrosis. The results of this experiment showed that on day 3 and day 7 IL 17 mice developed more severe renal fibrosis when compared to WT mice. From the findings it was inferred that IL 17 acts an inhibitory factor in TGF 946 induced renal fibroblast activation and extracellular matrix ECM synthesis and sequentially in renal interstitial fibrosis via down regulation of Smad independent pathway p38MAPK and AKT phosphorylations . It was stated that illustrating the novel regulatory mechanisms of fibrosis by the cytokine IL 17 may lead to a new therapeutic approach for progressive renal disease and fibrosis.
