Prostate cancer and heart attack share common risk factors

A healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables and regular physical activity are imperative

Cancer of the prostate has the same risk factors as that of heart blockages and both are linked to high saturated fat intake. With an increase in heart patients, there is also a corresponding increase in the number of prostate cancer patients in the society.

The need of the hour is to raise awareness on the fact that it is important to maintain a healthy body weight and keep physically active.

Prevention of both

• Get to and stay at a healthy weight. Indulge in regular physical activity.
• Limit your intake of high-calorie foods and drinks.
• Eat at least 2½ cups of vegetables and fruits each day. Choose whole grains instead of refined grain products. Limit the intake of processed meat and red meat.
• Limit the alcohol intake to no more than 2 drinks per day.
• Reduce intake of dairy foods and diets rich in calcium.

World Blood Donor Day: “Safe Blood for All”

World Blood Donor Day is celebrated on June 14 every year. The day marks the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian physician and biologist who discovered and classified the ABO blood groups.

The theme of this year’s campaign is blood donation and universal access to safe blood transfusion, as a component of achieving universal health coverage. The slogan “Safe blood for all” has been developed to raise awareness of the universal need for safe blood in the delivery of health care and the crucial roles that voluntary donations play in achieving the goal of universal health coverage. The theme encourages more people all over the world to become blood donors and donate blood regularly – actions which are key to building a strong foundation of sustainable national blood supplies that are sufficient to meeting the needs of all patients requiring transfusion…(WHO)

National Health Authority inks MoU with Quality Council of India

New Delhi: The National Health Authority (NHA), responsible for implementation of Ayushman Bharat and Quality Council of India, inked an agreement Wednesday for launching a joint initiative of digital certification for empanelled hospitals to improve the quality of healthcare system in the country. The initiative will help the hospitals to get fast-track certification while enhancing healthcare services, a statement said. The partnership aims to create a process to facilitate certification of at least 7,000 empanelled hospitals by December 2021 to build a network of quality healthcare providers. "The MoU seeks to put in place a simple, swift, transparent and paperless mechanism to encourage the hospitals to apply for certification," the statement said. There will be three levels of AB-PMJAY quality certifications -- Bronze, Silver and Gold with Gold being the highest level under this initiative.

TS PCB issues closure notices to pharma, chemical & plastic manufacturing cos for not adhering to pollution control methods

The Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TS PCB) has recently issued closure notices to some of the polluting pharma, chemical and plastic manufacturing companies which are categorised under Orange and Red categories functioning within the Hyderabad city. According to Ravinder Reddy, Senior Environmental Scientist, the state government had issued a Government Order (GO) in the year 2013 to shift all the polluting pharma, chemical and plastic manufacturing companies to areas surrounding to the Outer Ring Road (ORR). However, the GO was not implemented due to Telangana movement and agitation for the formation of Telangana. And now after the formation of the new state of Telangana, the state government has once again issued the GO 20 in 2018, urging the highly polluting pharma, plastic and other chemical companies categorised into Red and those companies which are less polluting categorised under Orange to send a proposal to the government for shifting of these polluting industries outside the ORR.

Maharashtra FDA files FIR against e-commerce major Amazon for online sale of prescription drugs

To curb the malpractice of selling prescription drugs online, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently filed FIR against e-commerce major Amazon in amongst 60 such cases detected of illegal online drug sales in the last couple of months. As part of its ongoing crackdown on illegal online drug sale, the state FDA has recently detected two such cases of medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) pills which is used in abortions being traded online in contravention to the law of the land. MTP is a schedule H drug and can be taken only against the prescription of a qualified gynaecologist. According to a senior FDA official, buying and selling of medicines online is illegal. As of today, there are no regulations in place for it. Though a policy is underway on regulating online sale of drugs, it has been a daunting task to bring to book the offenders as these online sales are facilitated either through courier services or transferred through offline retail stores in the neighborhood having valid licenses.

Medical Negligence: Karnataka HC Quashes Criminal Case Against ENT Surgeon

The Karnataka High Court by an order dated May 31, quashed and set aside an order passed by the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) at Sagara, taking cognizance of a complaint filed by a patient against an ENT surgeon, alleging medical negligence. Justice Alok Aradhe allowed the plea filed by Dr Prabhakar who sought to quash the proceedings on grounds that no expert opinion was taken before taking cognizance as is prescribed in cases against medical professionals. Secondly that the complaint was filed well beyond the limitation period of one year.

Cabinet approves MoC between India and Kyrgyzstan on Medicine

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) between India and Kyrgyzstan for collaborative research work on High Altitude Biology and Medicine. The new pact that is expected to be inked during Prime Ministers two-day visit to Kyrgyzstan beginning Thursday. Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said the MoC is aimed at further development and strengthening of mutual relationships in science and medicine, especially in high altitude biology and medicine.

Private hospital doctors shut OPDs in solidarity

Outpatient departments of private hospitals were paralysed on Wednesday as doctors did not attend to patients as a mark of protest against the attack on two junior doctors of NRS hospital. At some of the private hospitals there were patients but no doctors. At some, the OPDs wore a deserted look and there were neither patients nor doctors. The empty seats at the OPD of Woodlands hospital in Alipore outnumbered the occupied ones around 11am. “Most of the doctors are not attending to outdoor patients. The footfall is lower than usual,” a hospital official said. Dipak Ghosh, a Bandel resident, was among the few who had turned up at Woodlands. Ghosh was with his wife who suffers from high blood sugar and related ailments. She was at the hospital to consult an endocrinologist. The slot had been booked in the last week of May. But Ghosh who had read reports of the clash at NRS did not take any chance. “I had called up the hospital to check if the doctor would be available. I left home only after getting a confirmation,” he said. A few blocks away, the CMRI hospital was no different. Most seats on the ground floor OPD were empty.
