Encephalitis outbreak: Bihar CM visits Muzaffarpur hospital; toll reaches 108

Muzaffarpur: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur on Tuesday, two weeks following the Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) outbreak in the state.

The death toll reached 108 on Tuesday. A release issued by the district administration on Monday stated that 18 deaths were reported from Kejriwal hospital in the district and 85 from SKMCH.

The chief minister interacted with the doctors and the parents of the ailing children. The disease has affected children in the age group of 1-10. Maximum casualties have been reported from SKMCH in Muzaffarpur.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan had also visited the hospital on Sunday in a bid to review the ongoing situation, where patients are being treated in large numbers. Speaking to the media after visiting the hospital, Harsh Vardhan ensured that the doctors are doing their best to treat the children suffering from the deadly disease.

The Union Health Minister had assured the patients’ families of all possible help from the Centre. (India Today)
