Hyderabad: 150 industries to get land in phase 1 of Pharma City

With the Centre granting the National Investment Manufacturing Zone (NIMZ) status to Hyderabad Pharma City, the Telangana government is now going ahead with its plans to allot land to as many as 150 firms in phase I. The Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) has already acquired about 8,500 acres for the Pharma City project, which is coming up at Mucherla in Rangareddy district on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Senior officials said 350 firms had approached the government seeking land in Pharma City. “Initially, land will be allotted to 150 pharma units. Several pharma associations are queuing up for allotment of land. We will launch the application process soon and allotment will be made directly to individual companies,” principal secretary, industries, Jayesh Ranjan told TOI on Thursday. A couple of days ago, industries minister KT Rama Rao had revealed that Pharma City would be operationalised this year. Top sources in the government said once infrastructure facilities are in place, the process of land allotment would be completed before May this year. The government is speeding up the Pharma City project as all the required permissions, including environmental clearance, have already been granted by the Centre. Though the project was conceived in 2015, it took four years to get the clearances. Ten days ago, Union industry minister Piyush Goyal set the ball rolling by asserting that the Centre had granted its final approval for the project by giving it NIMZ status. In fact, the Centre approved NIMZ status to Pharma City in January 2016 but kept it on hold.

Tripura’s biggest ever drug haul: Yaba tablets worth Rs 8.92 crore

A joint operation of Border Security Force (BSF) and DRI officials Friday recovered a massive cache of 1,68,500 yaba tablets — containing a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine — worth over Rs 8.92 crore from Matinagar, a bordering village of Sipahijala district, 60 km from here. This drug haul is the largest-ever contraband seizure in Tripura. The narcotics haul came after a tip off about a drug sale underway across the Tripura-Bangladesh border, BSF Deputy Inspector General AK Yadav told reporters Friday. The search started at 9pm Thursday night and ended around 1.30am. “We have seized Rs 8.92 crore worth yaba tablets from Matinagar village in Sipahijala district. This is the biggest drugs seizure in a single go till now. It is likely these items were about to be smuggled into Bangladesh,” the BSF official said. Yadav said BSF has seized Rs 34 crore worth of contraband drugs, including cannabis, yaba and phensidyle in 2019. However, the trend shows drug peddlers have shifted from smuggling cannabis to yaba tablets since these are small, nearly odourless and easily concealable. Previously known as ‘yama’, Yaba is common in South and Southeast Asian countries. The pink tablet is consumed orally, heated and vaped, crushed and snorted and even injected after mixed in a solvent. Their smuggling trail commonly originates in the Myanmar border and enters Indian territory via Manipur, Mizoram and are moved into Bangladesh through the semi-porous border of Tripura. Nicknamed the ‘madness drug’, Yaba was previously banned in Thailand and several other countries due to its severe adverse affects.

Telangana newborn dies due to ‘negligence’ of doctor

Tension prevailed at Chiranjeeva Children’s Hospital in Hanamkonda on Thursday after a six-month-old boy died after three days of treatment at the private hospital due to alleged medical negligence. Angered by the death of the boy, the family members staged a protest at the hospital premises. However, a team of police personnel was deployed to bring in the situation under control. The child’s parents hail from Thatikayala village under Dharmasagar Mandal in Warangal district. The father, Sambaraju, said that he and his wife admitted the infant in the hospital on December 31 as he was suffering from breathing problems. On Thursday, the doctor stated that the condition of the child was critical and suggested that he be shifted to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital (MGM) in the city. “We immediately rushed him to MGM but he died while being transported,” said the wailing father. According to the Subedari police, the child’s parents and relatives have not come forward to file a case against the hospital.

After two more infants died on Friday at the JK Lon hospital in Rajasthan’s Kota, the death toll has now increased to 106, officials said. As many as 100 infants died at the government-run hospital in December 2019 and the six additional deaths took place in January 2020. The state government claimed that in the period 2014 to 2019, the death toll in 2019 had been the lowest. The BJP, on the other hand, demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on moral grounds over the deaths of infants in Kota. The BJP, on the directions of its working president JP Nadda, sent a three-member committee of its MPs to the Kota hospital this week to take stock of the situation. The committee that visited JK Lon hospital claimed there was administrative laxity and asked CM Ashok Gehlot and health minister to visit Kota to take necessary action. The family members of several young children who spoke to India Today TV earlier claimed severe crunch of staff, shortage of medical equipment and doctors not responding in a timely manner as some of the reasons behind the shoddy state of affairs at the hospital. Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday issued a notice to the Rajasthan government over the issue. The NHRC, in a statement, said it has issued a notice to the chief secretary, seeking a detailed report in the matter within four weeks. The commission said the notice was issued to ensure that such incidents do not recur in future.
