The Indian government has extended the upper limit for permitting abortions to 24 weeks, from the current 20 weeks giving women reproductive rights over their bodies.

The news comes about four months after the centre told the Supreme Court that right to reproductive autonomy did not outweigh States interest in protecting a foetus life and the 20 week limit could not be extended in a blanket manner.

The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Bill (2020) to amend the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act (1971) will be introduced in the next parliament session.

 Points in favour

  1. It is in favour of the reproductive rights of the women
  2. Many women in India come to know about the pregnancy after fiver, months, especially the unmarried ones
  3. More flexibility for women to abort on medical grounds between 20-24 weeks now
  4.  FOGSI and IMA have been supporting this move

Points against

It extends the official window for sex selective abortions up to 24 weeks. The amendment should come with a rider that all abortions after 12 weeks (12-24 weeks) will be done in defined registered centers.
