Drinking a cocoa with extra flavanol could temporarily reverse the decrease in walking ability for people with lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD), reported a pilot trial.

The phase II double-blind trial revealed that people randomized to 6 months of daily cocoa drinks walked 42.6 m further on the 6-minute walk test compared with peers given placebo at 2.5 hours after drinking the assigned beverage (+18.4 m vs -24.2 m over baseline, P=0.005). However, chronic intervention effects of cocoa were not significantly better than placebo (24 hours after ingestion: +15.1 m vs -2.9 m over baseline, P=0.12), reported the COCOA-PAD trialists in a study published online in Circulation Research.
