Solanum nigrum is a shrub that has a wide presence across India. The plant has been used for the treatment of various disorders related to gastroenterology and hepatology. A recent study assessed the hepatoprotective potential of S. nigrum extract against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity.

Investigators administered S. nigrum extract to experimental models for 30 days along with CCl4 – a well-known model to induce hepatotoxicity. Administration of CCl4 significantly increased liver enzymes and decreased hepatic DNA, RNA and protein levels. These changes were effectively diminished by treatment with the S. nigrum extract in a dose-dependent manner. The extract also led to improvement in the hepatic energy status as it enhanced the activities of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase). Histopathology revealed severe vacuolization and necrotic changes following CCl4 treatment which was checked by the co-administration of S. nigrum extract in a dose-dependent manner.

The current study thus demonstrated the hepatoprotective effects of S. nigrum which could be attributed to its potential role in improving the protein and energy levels in the hepatic tissue.
