An article published in Clinics in Liver Disease reported that the advent of liver transplant for acute liver failure (ALF) has drastically improved the survival rate. Liver transplant for ALF accounts for 8% of all transplant cases and the one-year survival rates are 79% in Europe and 84% in the United States. The authors stated that while some patients with ALF may recover spontaneously, approximately half require liver transplant. The essentiality of an early identification of patients with ALF was emphasized upon, for an immediate referral to a liver transplant center to enable a thorough evaluation. The article further declared that emergent liver transplant in a patient with ALF may place the patient at risk of severe complications in the postoperative period.
