The most common inflammatory dermatoses in children and adults is atopic dermatitis (AD). This skin disorder is linked with significant worsening of the quality of life. Immunoglobulin E appears to be an acceptable indicator of the atopic dermatitis due to its pathogenetic relationship with it.

A recent study was performed to evaluate the association between the total serum immunoglobulin E levels and the different grade of skin lesions. The lesions were measured with the SCORAD and oSCORAD scales in adult patients suffering from severe atopic dermatitis.

In all, 31 patients (17 women and 14 men) suffering from atopic dermatitis from early childhood were included in the study group in 2017. Total IgE levels were measured by the fluoroenzymatic immunoassay. The Spearmans rank correlation coefficient was also used to decide the power of the association between the concentration of total IgE and atopic dermatitis severity. To compare the distribution of IgE concentration and the grade of atopic dermatitis, the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann- Whitneys tests were used.

The study results revealed the significant correlation between SCORAD and oSCORAD scales. Nineteen patients were found with the IgE levels above 3500 IU/ml.

Thus, the study confirmed that in the patients with severe atopic dermatitis, the severity of the disease can be correlated with the concentration of total IgE levels. The outcome of this study can suggest of employing IgE as an atopic dermatitis biomarker.
