Another condition possibly linked to the coronavirus has captured researchers attention—COVID toes—are purple lesions or red bumps that manifest on the feet or hands. The condition usually commences with red or purple discoloration; the skin may become raised or develop ulcerations, especially, on the tips of digits and pads or on the tops of toes or sides of feet. The skin might feel hot, burning or itchy; the affected toes are initially painful to touch and a bit sore while walking. The pain and soreness last for just over a week and then, gradually subsides.

According to a case report from the European Journal of Pediatric Dermatology, this condition has never been observed in the past. Besides, this skin symptom that presents in COVID-19 patients seems to be “COVID-specific”.

Scientists speculate that COVID toes can precipitate due to magnanimous inflammation caused by the virus. The symptoms resemble pernio – caused by exposure to cold temperatures, resulting in inflammation which can appear as skin sores or bumps. Blood vessel clots which can occur in COVID-19, may also contribute to its pathogenesis.

Among the individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 and those who are suspected to be positive, nearly half were detected with purple lesions on feet or hands. Interestingly, for some patients, it was the only symptom. Although the condition seems more common in children and young people, its not exclusive to them.

Symptoms of COVID toes tend to resolve on its own; a dermatologist’s opinion can be availed. No specific treatment has been discovered yet. For patients experiencing discomfort, warming up of the digits could be soothing. Some physicians suggest aspirin; however, it’s hard to recommend any therapy.

Signs of this condition include:

  • Bumps on extremities and the torso
  • Vascular lesions on the hands, feet and buttocks
  • Gangrene in patients with severe symptoms and underlying conditions

This article summarized that an early recognition of COVID toes and using it as a testing qualifier can aid in preventing the spread of the virus and may change the course of management and care of patients.
