Only 6% cases need hospitalisation, over 40,000 have recovered: Govt

Hindustan Times- Rhythma Kaul

Just about 6.39% of active coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases in India need hospitalisation, according to the latest government data that indicates the outbreak has not been as severe in the country as in certain other countries. Only 0.45% of Covid-19 patients in India need ventilator support currently, compared to the estimated 2-3% globally. Intensive care treatment was being provided to about 3% cases as of Wednesday. Lav Agarwal, joint secretary, Union ministry of health, said the recovery rate of patients has also improved from the earlier 7.1% in late March when the lockdown to check the pandemic spread was imposed to the current 39.62%. “It is a positive sign to see that more than 40,000 positive cases have recovered, and those needing hospitalisation are much less than global figures,” said Agarwal at a briefing on Wednesday. Agarwal said 15 worst-hit countries with over 1.4 billion population have reported 3.6 million cases. He added India has a population of 1.37 billion population but has reported just around 100,000 cases so far. “[THE] 15 countries have reported at least 34 times more cases and 83 times more deaths as compared to India, which says a lot about measures taken by us to manage the situation. India’s focus has always been on taking preventive action,” said Agarwal. India has only 7.9 cases per 100,000 population compared to 62.3 globally. The global average rate is 4.2 deaths per 100,000 population while in India, it is 0.2. The government has attributed this to timely case identification and clinical management. India’s testing capacity has also been strengthened. Over 100,000 tests have been conducted daily since Monday. With 1,07,609 Covid-19 tests since Tuesday, their number has gone up to over 2.5 million in 555 labs.

Trumps use of malaria drug likely to be welcomed in India

The Indian Express- AP

President Donald Trump’s declaration that he was taking a malaria drug of dubious effectiveness to help fend off the coronavirus will likely be welcomed in India. Trumps previous endorsement of hydroxychloroquine catalyzed a tremendous shift in the South Asian country spurring the world’s largest producer of the drug to make much more of it prescribe it for frontline health workers treating the virus and deploy it as a diplomatic tool despite mounting evidence against using the drug for COVID19. Trump said Monday that he was taking hydroxychloroquine as a measure of protection against the virus The US Food and Drug Administration however has cautioned against using it outside of hospitals because of the risk of serious heart problems. Suhhil Gupta a pharmacist in New Delhi said Tuesday that Trumps announcement shouldn’t carry any weight in India. “He’s not a pharmacist His statements are not relevant to the field,” Gupta said. Still India’s policy on the decade’s old drug used to prevent malaria and treat lupus and rheumatoid arthritis drastically changed after Trump tweeted in March that the drug used together with an antibiotic could be game changers in the fight against the pandemic India’s health ministry quickly approved it as a prophylactic for health care workers and others at high risk of infection and as a treatment for critically ill patients.

16 hospitals get notice for turning away patients

The Hindu- PTI

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Wednesday served notices to 16 private hospitals for refusing to admit COVID-19 patients referred to them by the civic body. In the notices served under the Epidemic Diseases Act, the AMC has alleged that despite its order and an appeal made by Ahmedabad Medical Association, 16 hospitals had refused to cooperate and provide beds. The civic body had declared 16 hospitals as designated COVID-19 facilities in an order on May 16 and directed them to provide 50% of their beds for patients referred by the AMC, a release stated. Additional Chief Secretary Rajiv Kumar Gupta, who is overseeing the AMC’s COVID-19 operation, confirmed the news. The notices were served to major hospitals including Sterling Hospital, Life Care Hospital, SAL Hospital, Rajasthan Hospital, SFVP Hospital, Global Hospital and Sardar Hospital. The release said notices were served to these hospitals for “deliberately and willingly disobeying and causing grave prejudice to the safety and security of the public at large“. The civic body has also warned of action “under civil and criminal law, including filing of FIR, against erring hospitals.”

Lockdown-hit hospital sector hopes for govt. support

The Hindu- M.L. Melly Maitrey

The COVID-19 lockdown imposed to curb the virus transmission has impacted every sector, and corporate hospitals are no exception. Private hospitals are reeling under financial crunch due to a steep fall in revenue and at the same time, have incurred more expenses on measures to ensure physical distancing, purchase of personal protection kits and arrangement for isolation wards, separate accommodation for doctors and nurses attending patients and suspects. “The government asked private hospitals to be ready and allot isolation beds should there be a spike in cases beyond the capacity of government hospitals. The sector geared up to meet the challenge since saving lives is priority,” a private hospital head said. Association of Health Care Providers of India has represented to the Finance Minister to help the sector by releasing about ₹2,000 crore dues for medical services rendered under the Central Government Health Scheme and Employees Health Scheme. Concessions on GST, in statutory payouts, subsidy on PPEs as hospitals were buying from the market, provision of rapid test kits to screen every healthcare provider and relaxation on import duties on medical equipment will give some leeway to improve cash flow to sustain for six months, say hospital managements.
