Remdesivir improves time to recovery in COVID-19 patients: Study

New York: Remdesivir, the antiviral under clinical trials for treatment against novel coronavirus infection, is superior to the standard of care given to COVID-19 patients, according to a new study. The analysis, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, is based on data from the Adaptive COVID-19 Treatment Trial (ACTT), sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in the US.In the randomised, controlled trial, clinicians enrolled adults hospitalised with COVID-19 who showed infection in the lower respiratory tract and suffered from moderate to severe disease. ....read more

As a share, the number of Covid patients needing treatment may still be low but the concern is a growing one — paying private hospital bills amid looming economic distress and uncertainty over course of treatment.As of last week, less than 15 per cent of active Covid cases required hospitalisation. Of those in hospital, just 2.25 per cent needed admission in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU); 1.91 per cent required oxygen, and just 0.004 per cent required ventilatory support.

BDR Pharmaceuticals move on Remdesivir clone irks Gilead

New Delhi: BDR Pharmaceuticals, a Mumbai-based company, has sought the drug controller’s approval to manufacture and sell the generic version of Remdesivir without entering into a licensing pact with Gilead Sciences, prompting the patent-holder for the medicine to flag its concerns with the government.The Indian company had submitted its application for manufacturing the Covid-19 drug to the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) last week. The subject expert committee looking into the matter has asked BDR Pharma to submit details such as the chemistry manufacturing control (CMC) data, people familiar with the matter said. Gilead has approached the government and questioned the application, said these persons.

Suspended Doctor Admitted In Vizag Mental Institution Expresses Concerns Over Treatment

Dr. Sudhakar, presently admitted at a mental hospital in Vizag on the grounds of unstable mental condition, has written a letter to the hospital superintendent expressing concerns over his treatment. The doctor was allegedly suspended for his remarks against the state government and was later arrested for creating ruckus at a public place.In his letter to the hospital superintendent, Dr. Sudhakar reportedly went into the details of the controversy at Narsipatnam government hospital until his admission to the mental health institute.
