Lancet study finds no benefit for hydroxychloroquine in Covid-19 patients

BOSTON: Treatment for Covid-19 with the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, either with or without the antibiotic azithromycin, offers no benefit for Covid-19 patients, according to a large observational study.The research, published in the journal The Lancet, analysed data from nearly 15,000 patients with Covid-19 who received chloroquine or its analogue hydroxychloroquine, taken with or without the antibiotics azithromycin or clarithromycin, and 81,000 controls. ....read more

The Maharashtra governments decision to import Gileads antiviral drug Remdesivir from Bangladesh drug maker Eskayef Pharmaceuticals has taken the Indian pharmaceutical industry by surprise.But analysts and legal experts pointed out that it is perfectly legal to import the drug if it is not for commercial use.On June 6, Rajesh Tope, Maharashtra Health Minister, said the state would buy remdesivir from Dhaka-based Eskayef Pharma for Rs 12,000 per vial for 10,000 doses.

NEW DELHI: Markets regulator Sebi has strongly "censured" Astrazeneca Pharma India Ltds promoter and Elliot Group for professional misconduct and following unfair trade practices during the companys delisting plan in 2014.The regulator, in a 65-page order, said that Astrazeneca Pharma India Ltds (AZPIL) promoter AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals AB Sweden (AZPAB), and Elliott Group, which held 15.52 per cent stake in the company, had a private arrangement to sail through the delisting process.

India is in the 77th day of the lockdown with the economy slowly limping back to normalcy. Concerns are being raised due to an increase in the number of coronavirus infected people across the country, which stands at more than 2,65,000 with 7,466 deaths. Some are even accusing the governments of not listening to expert advice and allowing the resumption of economic activities without making a complete assessment. Questions are also being raised about the rationality and efficacy of the decision to impose complete lockdown from 25 March, when India had reported only 500-odd coronavirus cases and opening the economy when the number of corona infected people started rising , the government has decided to allow opening up of the economy in all respects with fewer restrictions. Apparently the argument seems logical until we compare the Indian scenario with what is happening in other major countries around the world.
