Drug APIs from China to be cleared at Indian ports after pharma industry plea

NEW DELHI : The customs department will start clearing shipments of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) imported from China stuck at ports across India as the government relented after pleas by the pharmaceutical industry.“Practically every pharmaceutical raw material is being cleared from the ports. There five key starting materials and 53 APIs which are 100% imported from China are among the raw materials that are stuck," Dinesh Dua, chairman of Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil), told Mint, adding that the total value of shipments is around ₹200 crore.

Probe ordered after hospital performs surgery without waiting for Covid result

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has initiated an inquiry into the circumstances that led a private hospital at Banihal conduct surgery on a woman without waiting for her Covid-19 report. The 32-year-old later tested positive for the virus.Banihal Sub Divisional Magistrate Zahir Abbas said the woman was operated for hernia on Monday and her Covid test report came as positive on Tuesday. As per the protocol, a hospital is required to get the patient tested for Covid before undertaking surgery on him/her, he said.A surgeon at the hospital, meanwhile, said the surgery had to be performed in emergency following obstruction in her artery. “…Her family insisted on getting her operated at Banihal in view of restrictions on inter-district movement in the UT.”

Lakhs of doctors continue to risk their lives daily to stand between people and the Covid-19 infection.Since the first reported case of the virus on January 30, at least 70 Indian doctors are feared dead on the frontlines of the Covid-19 battlefield where health care workers are at highest risk.Community health experts say the government must urgently launch infection control audits across hospitals to determine the scale of dangers the health care workers face during the pandemic.“It is perhaps no coincidence that 2020 is Year of the Nurse and Midwife, the World Health Day theme. Health care workers, including doctors, have faced the greatest risks in the Covid-19 pandemic. More than 2,000 health care workers have tested positive for Covid-19 in Delhi alone. An earlier ICMR report found 1,073 positive cases among health care workers till May 23. It’s time the government analysed data of infections and deaths among health care workers and conducted infection control audits,” Rajib Dasgupta of JNU’s Community Health Department says.
