The good fight: How pharma companies, healthcare staff, government joined forces to fight Covid-19

Financial Express

The world is walking a perilous path to fight one of the most challenging health crises of our times. The pandemic has upended healthcare systems everywhere. It appears our ability to pin down the virus, at this point, is slower than its speed to mutate. However, the pandemic has given rise to several opportunities for the Indian healthcare system as well. The healthcare system has been making a shift towards self-sufficiency and the outbreak has given impetus to the government to pursue ideas that would pave way for a self-reliant ecosystem. The Prime Minister’s call for an Atmanirbhar Bharat provided further impetus to the Indian healthcare landscape to be ‘vocal for local’. There has been a rise in the domestic manufacture of personal protection kits, testing kits and medicines.

Probe ordered after hospital performs surgery without waiting for Covid result

The 32-year-old later tested positive for the virus.Banihal Sub Divisional Magistrate Zahir Abbas said the woman was operated for hernia on Monday and her Covid test report came as positive on Tuesday. As per the protocol, a hospital is required to get the patient tested for Covid before undertaking surgery on him/her, he said.A surgeon at the hospital, meanwhile, said the surgery had to be performed in emergency following obstruction in her artery. “…Her family insisted on getting her operated at Banihal in view of restrictions on inter-district movement in the UT.”

At least 70 Indian doctors have died so far while on Covid duty

The Tribuen

Lakhs of doctors continue to risk their lives daily to stand between people and the Covid-19 infection.Since the first reported case of the virus on January 30, at least 70 Indian doctors are feared dead on the frontlines of the Covid-19 battlefield where health care workers are at highest risk.Community health experts say the government must urgently launch infection control audits across hospitals to determine the scale of dangers the health care workers face during the pandemic.“It is perhaps no coincidence that 2020 is Year of the Nurse and Midwife, the World Health Day theme. Health care workers, including doctors, have faced the greatest risks in the Covid-19 pandemic. More than 2,000 health care workers have tested positive for Covid-19 in Delhi alone. An earlier ICMR report found 1,073 positive cases among health care workers till May 23. It’s time the government analysed data of infections and deaths among health care workers and conducted infection control audits,” Rajib Dasgupta of JNU’s Community Health Department says.
