Manufacturer to replace 81 ‘unsuitable’ ventilators

But officials at JJ and St George’s hospitals say they will first test the “upgraded” version before accepting the new batch.After the state-run JJ and St George Hospitals said that 81 Indian-made ventilators, donated by NGOs last month, were not suitable for Covid-19 patients, the manufacturer has said it will replace them with an upgraded version. The hospitals said, however, that they would first see how the new ventilators worked on Covid-19 patients before accepting the new batch. ,Mumbai Mirror had reported last week that both hospitals had given the machines a thumbs-down.,While St George Hospital has already returned its share of 39 ventilators, JJ hospital authorities have asked that their 42 machines be taken back too. Astrazeneca’s Dapagliflozin gets DCGI nod for treatment of heart failure

AstraZeneca Pharma India has received the Marketing Authorization for Dapagliflozin (Forxiga), for the treatment of patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). This is the first in class SGLT-2 inhibitor drug approved for the treatment of HFrEF. Reportedly, it is the first drug proven to significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalisation for heart failure in patients with HFrEF.The approval follows positive results from the landmark Phase III DAPA-HF trial, that proved that Dapagliflozin in addition to standard of care, reduced the risk of the composite outcome of cardiovascular death or the worsening of heart failure versus placebo by 26 per cent. About one-fourth patients in the study population were from the Asian region including India.Gagandeep Singh, MD, AstraZeneca Pharma India said, “ Heart failure is a serious health condition that affects ~6.4 crore people worldwide and at least 8–10 million in India. The accelerated regulatory approval in India will provide the much-needed treatment to help patients reduce their disease burden and live longer”

Incentive scheme ‘to aid’ bulk drug production

Pharmaceutical manufacturers have termed the production-linked incentive scheme for promoting domestic manufacturing of critical key starting materials (KSMs), drug intermediates and active pharmaceutical ingredients notified by the Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers as a crucial step in promoting bulk drug production.Aimed at reducing dependence on China, the officials of the State Drug Control Administration were encouraging the investors to come forward and avail its benefits. Notably, the domestic pharma industry imported nearly 70 per cent APIs, which is the raw material, from China. An outlay of Rs 6,940 crore has been set aside for this scheme which is open for four months period.

India COVID-19: Online Survey Shows Not All Is Well on PPE Availability Front

An online survey conducted by a team of independent public health researchers revealed an inadequate supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers in India. ,The researchers, Savithri Devi, Shrinidhi Datar and Subha Sri B, conducted the survey between May 6 and 18, 2020, with help from Antony Kollannur, Rakhal Gaitonde and Prabir Chatterjee. The respondents, 392 in all, included workers at various levels of healthcare: doctors, residents and interns, nurses, community health workers and ancillary staff. ,The report made recommendations to further investigate the availability of PPE, ensure its availability, and train healthcare workers in the use, reuse and disposal of PPE.

World’s largest Covid Care facility with 10,000 beds inaugurated in Delhi

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal inaugurated the 10,000-bedded Sardar Patel Covid Care Centre and Hospital (SPCCCH) at Radha Soami Satsang Beas on Sunday. The facility is created on an emergent basis by the South Delhi District Administration with full support of the ministry of home affairs in record time of 10 days.This the world’s largest Covid care facility which will function as an isolation centre for mild and asymptomatic Covid-19 positive patients. At least 10% of the beds have oxygen facility in case the patient develops severe breathlessness and requires tertiary hospital care.Operationally, the SPCCCH has been linked to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital. The referral tertiary care hospitals are Lok Nayank Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital and Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital.
