Investigators at Christian Medical College, Vellore, India recently studied an outbreak of hepatitis A infection among children in an urban settlement of Vellore.

Fifty eight cases of jaundice were reported from April through August, 2019. Investigators tested the sera from children presenting with jaundice for hepatitis A virus (HAV) IgM.

HAV IgM was found to be positive in 18 (94.7%) of the 19 cases that were tested. The children also received a blood culture as a part of the ongoing Surveillance for Enteric Fever in India (SEFI). Blood cultures from three children with confirmed hepatitis A infection grew Salmonella sp. - two exhibited Salmonella Typhi and one Salmonella Poona. Salmonella Poona has been reported for the first time from India. The overall hospitalization rate during the outbreak was estimated as 21%.

Hepatitis A outbreaks continue to occur with considerable morbidity in children from endemic settings, with development of other coexisting enteric infections.
