Delhi: Screening begins for vaccine volunteers

New Delhi: Health screening of people who volunteered for the trial of Covaxin — India’s indigenous vaccine for Covid-19 — has started.Delhi-based Dr Dangs Lab, which has been selected as the central lab for human clinical trials of Covaxin, said it has already started receiving samples from 50 to 100 subjects per day from various trial sites for safety testing. ,“We will be increasing operations as per assigned timelines to cover 12 sites across the country over this month,” Dr Navin Dang, founder of Dr Dangs Lab, said. ,Covaxin has been developed and manufactured by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research. Glenmark Pharmaceuticals rose 3.17% to Rs 426.80 after the company announced top-line results from phase 3 clinical trial of favipiravir in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19.The drug maker on Wednesday announced top-line results from a Phase 3 clinical trial in mild to moderate COVID-19 patients conducted across seven clinical sites in India. The open-label randomized, multicenter clinical trial, conducted in 150 patients, evaluated the efficacy and safety of Favipiravir plus standard supportive care (Favipiravir treatment arm) in mild to moderate patients, randomized within a 48 hour window of testing RT-PCR positive for COVID-19.

Chhattisgarh: Woman carried in cooking vessel across river to hospital

A pregnant and close-to-term woman was carried in a cooking vessel across a river to reach the nearest hospital, nearly 15 km away, in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district and gave birth to a still-born baby, allegedly due to negligence of the staff at the community hospital in Bhopalpatnam town, according to her husband. ,Her husband – Harish Yalam – complained the stillbirth was the result of hospital staff waiting for the duty doctor to arrive for hours to look at his wife – Lakshmi Yalam. The incident took place on July 13. ,Harish said he has lodged a complaint with the block medical officer (BMO) and will meet the collector if no action is taken. ,BMO Ajay Ramteke told the media that showcause notices have been served on three hospital staff. “We have received the complaint and are investigating what happened that night. Due action will be taken,” he said.
