World Hepatitis Day, observed every year on July 28, is aimed at raising awareness about viral hepatitis. The disease causes inflammation of the liver, eventually giving way to an array of health problems, including liver cancer.

Viral hepatitis continues to cause thousands of deaths every day amid the ongoing pandemic. The theme for this year is “Hepatitis-free future.” There is special emphasis on the prevention of hepatitis B among mothers and newborns. The World Health Organization is set to publish new recommendations on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of the virus on July 28.
