During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, cancer treatment should not be discontinued or delayed if it has the potential to impact overall survival, according to new recommendations from the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO).
The society also recommends against labeling all patients with cancer as being vulnerable to infection with the virus as it can result in inappropriate care with negative outcomes. The recommendations are aimed at guiding physicians to optimize the pathway to cancer care besides improving outcomes during the pandemic.
