‘Most patients who recovered in Wuhan suffer lung damage’

Ninety per cent of a sample group of coronavirus-recovered patients from a prominent hospital in China’s Wuhan city where the pandemic broke out have reported lung damage and five per cent of them are again in quarantine after testing positive for the virus, according to a media report on Wednesday. A team at the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University led by Peng Zhiyong, director of the hospital’s ICU, has been conducting follow-up visits with 100 recovered patients since April. The first phase of this one-year programme finished in July. The average age of the patients in the study is 59. According to the first phase results, 90% of the patients’ lungs are still in a damaged state, which means their lungs ventilation and gas exchange functions have not recovered to the level of healthy people, state-run Global Times reported. ....read more

The center is soon to come up with an exclusive Research and Development policy for the pharmaceutical sector soon as it looks to take India’s pharma sector on par with countries like US and Europe. “We are working (on the R&D policy) … so our department has taken the initiative through industry academia interaction for framing this policy and we are likely to finalise it shortly,” PD Vaghela, Secretary of Department of Pharmaceuticals, said at a virtual event organised on the 77th Foundation day of CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology on Wednesday, PTI reported. He also said that this will be a major push for scientists to come up with new innovations.

Indian pharma industry expected to be stable this year, says credit rating agency

The Indian pharmaceutical industry is expected to register a growth of 14.2 percent in the second quarter of the current financial year contrary to 4.8 percent in the first quarter, a study by Information and Credit Rating Agency (ICRA) has found. The growth could be attributed to the outbreak of many diseases in many parts aiding the growth of the anti-infective segment. ,Gaurav Jain, Vice President and Co-head of ICRA, said the global demand scenario is largely expected to remain stable for Indian pharmaceutical industry owing to inelastic nature of prescription drugs though some impact on volume growth will be felt owing to lockdown (lesser OPDs / Elective surgeries) and lower economic growth. “The impact of lower demand will be felt more in less developed countries which are additionally negatively impacted owing to low crude oil prices,” he said.

Even before the pandemic exposed the faultlines of India’s health infrastructure—even in big cities like Delhi and Mumbai—it was always clear it was bursting at the seams. With just 0.6 doctors per 1,000 population and 2.2 nurses, as compared to the WHO’s norm of 1 and 3, respectively, India simply cannot cope with the demands made by its citizens even in non-pandemic situations. Indeed, unless the level of Covid-19 infections are milder than those seen in some countries, India will be hard-pressed to deal with the situation considering the infection is rapidly spreading to semi-urban and rural areas.

Tripura doctors stage protest over suspension of colleague posted at Covid Care centre

A doctor posted at a Covid-19 Care Centre of Govind Ballabh Panth (GBP), the only dedicated Covid-19 hospital in Tripura, was suspended on Tuesday. The move invited protests from the doctors and medical staff. Dr Uttam Bhattacharjee, an assistant professor of Ophthalmology department of the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), was suspended under sub-rule (I) of Rule 10 of the Central Civil Service (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1965 and a disciplinary action is contemplated against him, according to an order served by joint secretary Debasish Das. Dr Bhattacharjee was asked not to leave the capital city without permission of the concerned authority.
