In ancient Greece from around 469 - 399 BC, Socrates was known for his wisdom. One day a person ran up to Socrates excitedly and said that he wanted to tell him something about Diogenes. Socrates interrupted him and said that before telling him anything, he’ll have to pass a little test - the Triple Filter Test.

Before the man tells Socrates anything about Diogenes, Socrates wanted him to filter what he was going to say. The first filter was Truth. Socrates asked the man if he had made sure that what he was about to tell him was true.

The man said no as he had just heard about it.

Then Socrates asked him to try the second filter - the filter of Goodness. He asked the man if what he was about to tell him about Diogenes was something good.

The man said no.

So, Socrates said that what he wanted to tell him about Diogenes may be bad, and might not even be true.

The man was a little embarrassed now. Socrates then asked him to try the third filter - the filter of Usefulness. Socrates asked the man if what he wanted to tell him about Diogenes would be useful to him.

The man again said no. Socrates said that what he wanted to say was neither True nor Good nor even Useful, then why did he want to tell it to him or anyone else?

The man was ashamed and realized his mistake.
