 Off-label plasma use in Nagpur soon to curb Covid-19 deaths

NAGPUR: Maharashtra’s Project Platina is the world’s biggest clinical trial of plasma therapy, but more importantly it aims at saving lives of serious and critical Covid-19 patients through off-label use of collected plasma. ,After sudden spike in deaths of Covid-19 patients in Nagpur district, the Project Platina is coming up with an option of off-label use of plasma for critical and serious patients. The off-label plasma use will be introduced not only in government but also private hospitals where patients are willing to go for it. ,“Off-label use of plasma has got emergency authorization from the government. We have used it on 63 patients in Kolhapur and five in Pune. The results were promising. No death was reported in Kolhapur while two patients having severe comorbidities died in Pune. In Nagpur, we will start it in a day or two,” said Dr Mohammad Faisal, state coordinator of Project Platina. ....read more

Glenmark to launch stronger version of FabiFlu for Covid-19 treatment in India

NEW DELHI: Drugmaker Glenmark on Thursday said it will launch a higher strength (400 mg) version of oral antiviral drug favipiravir, a medicine granted emergency use authorization by the countrys drug regulator to treat mild to moderate Covid-19 patients. ,Favipiravir is manufactured by Fujifilm by the brand name Avigan and has been in use in Japan since 2014 to treat novel influenza virus. ,In India, Glenmark launched the generic version of the drug under the brand name FabiFlu in June and received the EUA by the Drug Controller General of India.

Four coronavirus patients, accused of spitting on a doctor at a medical facility in Tripura, surrendered before police on Thursday after their interim bail was cancelled by the high court, officials said. ,The accused persons surrendered before the officer-in-charge of the New Capital Complex police station, they said. ,Accordingly, they were produced before the chief judicial magistrate of West Tripura, pleading for test identification (TI) parade with seven days of police remand, a senior officer said. ,The court after hearing the arguments kept the verdict reserve till the last report came in. We will do whatever direction is given by the magistrate," he said.

Clinic sealed in Hyderabad after doctor claims he can cure COVID-19

A clinic in Hyderabad was sealed following a complaint that the doctor there has invented a cure to COVID-19. The doctor also claimed that there is no need to wear a mask. As per the government, wearing a mask or a cotton cloth is one of the ways to control the spread of the virus. A report in The Times of India suggests that the clinic in Warangal Urban was sealed following a complaint. “He is also going for home visits of coronavirus patients and giving treatment and asking them not to wear a mask and putting their life and others’ lives at risk,” the complaint from branch president Dr Kothagattu Srinivas read as. The health ministry is yet to find a cure to COVID-19. There were reports that Indian officials might invent a medicine by August 15 but the medicine for the infection will only be available at the end of the year.
