Testing ramped up to 9L a day, positivity rate now 6.1%

New Delhi: In what are the best numbers in a while, India conducted close to 9 lakh tests on a single day while the daily positivity rate fell to 6.1% on Tuesday, reports Sushmi Dey. The lower positivity rate, despite higher testing, is seen as a reassuring development as the daily count of cases has risen in the past couple of months. The government said the trends in Covid cases over the last few days (August 13-17), especially on testing and deaths, were welcome news, but added that there was no room for laxity in testing and containment measures. “If we look at the daily cases since August 3, it has gone down from over 64,000 to 55,000. There is a reducing trend. But five days is a short span in a pandemic, so there is no room for complacence,” health secretary Rajesh Bhushan said. The number of deaths dropped during this period — from 1,007 on August 13 to 876 on Tuesday — following a constant downward trend. Health ministry data showed that average daily positivity rate had reduced from a little over 10% in the second week of July (July 8-14) to nearly 7.8% in the week of August 12-18, despite increased testing. Similarly, average fatality rate has dropped from nearly 2.9% in first week of July (July 1-7) to 1.9% in the week of August 12-18. ....read more

Relieve Stress by Changing the Interpretation

Stress is the reaction of the body or the mind to the interpretation of a known situation. Stress management, therefore, involves either changing the situation, changing the interpretation or taming the body the yogic way in such a way that stress does not affect the body. Every situation has two sides. Change of interpretation means looking at the other side of the situation. It is something like half glass of water, which can be interpreted as half empty or half full. Studies have shown that anger, hostility and aggression are the new risk factors for heart disease. It has been shown that even recall of anger can precipitate a heart attack. ....read more

Covid-19 vaccine tracker, August 19: Australia to give free shots; India asks developers for price

The Indian Express

Coronavirus Vaccine Tracker, August 19: Australia has said once a vaccine for the novel Coronavirus becomes available, it will offer it free to all its citizens. Australia has entered into an agreement with pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca for securing access to the vaccine it is developing in collaboration with Oxford University. “If this vaccine proves successful, we will manufacture and supply vaccines straight away under our own steam and make it free for 25 million Australians,” Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison was quoted as saying in a BBC report. India has asked developers of three vaccines that are currently undergoing human trials in the country to disclose estimates of the price at which their respective vaccines can be made available.

India says covid vaccines progressing well. Drug makers asked to indicate prices

LiveMint

The covid vaccine trials in India are progressing well and the manufactures have been asked to indicate potential prices of the vaccines, the Indian government said. Dr. V.K. Paul, a member of NITI Aayog and who heads the governments expert group on covid vaccine administrative panel, said: "We have reviewed all these vaccine candidates. These are progressing well and their developments are taking place in a reassuring manner." "One vaccine is in the stage of phase-3 trials, the other two are also progressing well and are in the phase 1-2 of clinical trials," he added. The national expert group on covid vaccine administration earlier this week met representatives of leading domestic manufactures, including Serum Institute of India, Bharat Biotech and Zydus Cadila, on Monday to take inputs about the present stage of various candidate vaccines as well as their expectations from the government.

Suicides Among Doctors Were Too Common in India. Then the Pandemic Came.

ETimes

Bengaluru: As India groans under the weight of COVID-19, another underreported crisis has come to the fore. In the last two months, nearly ten doctors have reportedly died by suicide in different institutions across the country. Most of them were younger than 30 years. The latest addition to this unfortunate list was Mohit Singhla, a research officer in the paediatrics department of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi – the third doctor to have died thus at this hospital in this period. Suicide among doctors is a complex, multi-factoral issue that has been plaguing the country for decades now. Studies from across the world indicate that suicide rates among doctors are higher than in the general population. According to the 2019 World Health Statistics, there are 10.6 suicides per one lakh people every year, although in India there are 16.3. And while studies that compare suicide rates among doctors with that of the general population in India are lacking, “there is no reason why it should be any different,” Soumitra Pathare, director of the Centre for Mental Health Law and Policy, Pune, told The Wire Science.
