New high: India tests 10L samples in a day

NEW DELHI: India has crossed a significant milestone of testing 10 lakh samples in a day to detect Covid-19 as the average number of tests conducted every week rises rapidly with the aim of the detection, containment and contact tracing strategy keeping the positivity rate below 10%. With 10,23,836 samples tested on Friday, positivity for the day dropped to 6.8%, even as fresh cases continued to remain high at nearly 70,000 - in line with the trend during the week. The week-wise average daily positivity rate - which was hovering in the range of 9.03% to 10.94% between July 8 to Aug 11 (nearly a month) - is signaling a downward trend during the last two weeks. The average daily positivity dropped to 7.7% during the week of August 12-18 and even in the current week so far, after average daily tests increased to over 8 lakh samples. ....read more

Healthcare Workers Are Dying but Nobody Is Promising Their Sacrifices Wont Go in Vain

The wire

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated many lives and livelihoods around the world, but in India, the challenges have perhaps been the most formidable to its health system and its workers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored this when he announced a complete lockdown across the country on March 24 and said, “Think about the doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, pathologists who are working day and night in hospitals to save each and every life. Think about hospital administration staff, ambulance drivers, ward boys, sanitation workers who are working to serve others in these difficult condition.” He also asked for the people to pray for personnel engaged in the delivery of essential and emergency services (e.g. police, fire service, garbage collectors, etc.). In fact, the Centre on April 21 launched a portal – at covidwarriors.gov.in – to maintain a database of healthcare professionals and volunteers, including ASHA workers and anganwadi workers, and claimed 1.24 crore such individuals were available in the country. The portal is meant to help local administrations and state governments tackle COVID-19. The number of infected and killed workers could be extrapolated from the COVID-19 positivity and fatality rates respectively. But these figures would be mere conjecture – not desirable substitutes for validated data.

Doctor panel advice to free up ICU for critical patients

The Telegraph online

A panel of government doctors is visiting hospitals and requesting authorities and doctors to shift Covid patients out of intensive care units when they show signs of improvement. The move will help hospitals in admitting more critical patients to ICUs, the panel has said. Hospitals in several countries have faced shortage of ICU beds during the pandemic. In countries like the US and Italy, many hospitals have said they could not provide critical patients with proper care for want of ICU beds. “In India and Bengal, the situation is still not that bad. But with thousands of fresh cases being reported in our state daily, keeping ICU beds available, as many as possible, is one of our top priority,” a health department official said. “We cannot force doctors to shift critical patients out of ICUs but we are advising them how they can be less rigid in evaluating the criticality of a Covid patient.”
