Covid’s wide reach touches pancreas too

New Delhi: Eight months into the pandemic, scientists are still learning about the effects of Covid-19 on various organs of the body. Initially, it was thought that the infection mainly affected the upper and lower respiratory tracts. Later, manifestations of the disease in the heart and brain also became evident. Now, it turns out that the pancreas — the organ behind the lower part of the stomach that secretes enzymes that aid in digestion — is also being affected by the infection. Whether the effect was direct or indirect was still a matter of research, said doctors. ....read more

The spiritual prescription "I am sorry"

Two hardest words for a doctor to say: "I’m sorry." Most defence lawyers counsel doctors to not apologize to patients. Their view is that if you say you’re sorry for something, you are implicitly taking some degree of responsibility for whatever has happened. In other words, you are pleading guilty. The complainant’s lawyers may use a doctor’s apology to the maximum extent possible to show the doctor knew what they did was wrong. The usual approach is deny and defend. But, Apologizing after a medical error is the humane thing to do. Patients often sue simply because it’s the only way to find out what went wrong. Erecting a wall of silence is "enough to make someone very angry. And it’s awfully easy for an angry person to find a lawyer who will listen to them. At that point, it’s too late to say sorry. ....read more

This Indian-origin doctor in UK creates a 21-Day immunity plan to fight COVID-19

Livemint

London: A UK-based Indian-origin doctor, who has been championing an anti-obesity drive as a means to combat the severe effects of COVID-19, on Thursday released a new book that offers a “simple, evidence-based" plan to help improve health parameters. The medic says he wrote the book, which will hit the shelves in India in the coming weeks, in just six weeks because he and his publishers wanted it out as soon as possible to help readers build resilience to infection, given the current coronavirus pandemic. UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock had also consulted him, seeking evidence linking COVID-19 and obesity. “I informed him, as I make the case in the book, that obesity is just the tip of the diet related disease iceberg. In other words, were all vulnerable," said Malhotra, who is also a visiting Professor of Evidence Based Medicine at Salvador’s Bahiana School of Medicine and Public Health in Brazil.
