Data suggest that patients who have undergone bariatric surgery (BS) have a risk for developing alcohol use disorder.

Investigators, in the present study, assessed the patient demographics and impact on liver disease severity among 11 patients with prior BS who were listed for transplantation on account of alcoholic liver disease. These patients were compared with 177 patients without BS.

BS patients were younger and a female predominance was noted. These patients presented with more severe decompensation. The timeframe between diagnosis, listing, and transplantation was found to be significantly shorter among patients with prior BS. The incidence of post-transplant complications and 3-year survival rate was shown to be comparable.

The study concluded that alcoholic liver disease with rapid decompensation may develop after BS. Early identification with referral to a transplant center is thus needed. Additionally, there is a need to pay attention to pre-surgery screening for alcohol overuse risk factors.
