Covid-19: WHO official says attempts to reach herd immunity naturally dangerous

Geneva: Attempts to reach herd immunity naturally would be dangerous and fraught with scores of deaths, while vaccination is a safer and more effective path, Maria van Kerkhove, the Covid-19 technical lead at the World Health Organization (WHO), said on Thursday. "What we are working towards ... is to have a safe and effective vaccine that can provide protection to a large proportion of the population so the virus doesnt have an opportunity to transmit. But trying to reach herd immunity naturally would be very dangerous because a lot of people would die," van Kerkhove told a virtual press briefing. At least two-thirds of a population needs to develop the immunity for it to matter, and that, in turn, needs the vaccine to happen safely and effectively, according to the health official. ....read more

Why do we burn camphor in any pooja?

No aarti is performed without camphor. Camphor burns itself out completely, when lit, without leaving a trace. Camphor represents our inherent tendencies or vasanas. When lit by the fire of knowledge about the self, the vasanas burn themselves out completely, not leaving a trace of ego. Ego is responsible for a sense of individuality that keeps us separate from the Lord or consciousness. In addition, camphor, on burning, emits a pleasant perfume. This signifies that as we burn our ego, we can only ....read more

Coronavirus LIVE Updates: Indias Covid-19 Tally Crosses 35 Lakh-mark With Spike of Over 78,000 New Cases in 24 Hrs; Assam Minister, 3 More BJP MLAs Test Positive

News 18 India

Coronavirus LIVE Updates: India witnessed a record surge of 78,761 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 35,42,733, the Union Health Ministry said. The number of deaths registered in one day stood at 948, taking the total number of fatalities to 63,498. India is the third worst-hit country by the coronavirus pandemic after the United States and Brazil. India has been recording the highest single-day surge in fresh Covid cases since August 4. The record high comes a day after the Centre announced guidelines for Unlock 4.0, giving the nod to social, political and religious events as well as restarting metro services in a graded manner starting September 7. Meanwhile, Assam Hill Areas Development Minister Sum Ronghang became the first minister of the BJP-led state government to contract Covid-19, even as three more saffron party MLAs tested positive, officials said on Saturday. A total of 20 legislators have so far tested positive for coronavirus in the state, they said. Ronghang, also the mines and minerals minister, has received flak for getting admitted to a private hospital here without informing anyone in his office, after testing positive on August 25. "His action has evoked sharp reactions as these things should not be hidden. Unfortunately, his driver and a PSO have also tested positive," an official said.
