Pharma sector offers potential for high exports but India overly relies on China for drug ingredients

Financial Express

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das today said that the drugs and pharmaceuticals sector is among the sunrise sectors that offer the potential for higher exports in the post-COVID period. With strong drug manufacturing expertise at low cost, India is one of the largest suppliers of generic drugs and vaccines and some Indian manufacturers have already entered into new partnerships with global pharma companies to produce vaccines on a large scale, Shaktikanta Das added. However, India heavily depends on China for raw materials required in drug manufacturing, which is severely affected due to the lockdowns and supply chain disruptions. There are 58 Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) for which the country is heavily dependent on China, D V Sadananda Gowda, Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers, said in a reply to a question in Lok Sabha. In FY 2017-18, 68.62 per cent of raw materials were imported from China, while the percentage remained 66.53 per cent and 72.4 per cent in the next two fiscal years, according to the parliament papers. Also, the restrictions on movement of people and lockdown enforced in various places, logistic issues, etc, are believed to have impacted the supply of raw materials from China.

Why COVID-19 presents a golden opportunity to Indian pharma firms

Express Pharma

India is among the leaders in the global pharma industry, being the third-largest producer in terms of volume and at the 10th position in terms of value. A significant raw material base and availability of a skilled workforce have enabled India to emerge as an international manufacturing hub. It is one of the top manufacturers of generic medicines worldwide, with 20 per cent share in their global supply. India is emerging as the epicentre of vaccine manufacturing. Top pharma companies in the country are supplying basic and advanced vaccines to nearly 150 nations. The state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in India, that enjoy government support, have the largest capacity globally for manufacturing WHO-prequalified vaccines.

"382 Doctors Died Of Covid": Medical Body Says Centre "Abandoning" Heroes

NDTV

New Delhi: Union health minister Dr Harshavadhans statement on coronavirus in parliament, which had no word on the doctors who died in the line of duty, and his junior ministers statement that the Centre had no data as health is a state subject, has infuriated the Indian Medical Association. Accusing the government of "indifference", "abdication" and "abandonment of heroes", the countrys top body of medical practitioners said in such a circumstance, the government "loses the moral authority to administer the Epidemic Act 1897 and the Disaster Management Act". So far, 382 doctors have died of coronavirus, the IMA said. In the list it released, the youngest doctor to lose his life was 27 years old and the oldest was 85.

‘Treat them as martyrs’: IMA publishes list of 382 doctors who died of COVID

tribuneindia

The Indian Medical Association on Thursday published a list of 382 doctors — some as young as 27 years — who succumbed to COVID 19 in the line of duty and demanded adequate compensation for their families. IMA in a statement also demanded that doctors who died of COVID be treated as martyrs for purposes of compensation. It came down heavily on the Health Minister for not sharing the COVID mortality among doctors and said this reeked is government indifference. “IMA hereby publishes the list of Indian doctors who died in the pandemic due to Covid 19. We demand they be acknowledged and treated as martyrs. Their families and children deserve solace and from the Government. IMA also urges the Government to seek data from the representatives of nurses and other healthcare workers,” IMA president Rajan Sharma wrote to the government.
