Second infection more severe for four Mumbai health workers: Lancet

MUMBAI: Reinfection of Covid-19 has been confirmed using whole genome sequencing in four healthcare workers from Mumbai. All four have a more severe Covid-19 infection as compared to their earlier episode, according to a preprint published on The Lancet medical journal’s website. The four reinfected patients include three doctors from the BMC-run Nair Hospital and another healthcare worker from Hinduja Hospital. The research — conducted by the two hospitals along with the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) and the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) in Delhi — found 39 mutations within eight genomes (four samples each of the first infection and four samples from the second infection). ....read more

Search for Happiness in the Present Moment

Happiness should not be considered as being synonymous with pleasure. Pleasure is transient and is always associated with pain later on. Any transient addiction to any of the five senses will either lead to pleasure or pain. Pleasure leads to attachment resulting in more intense and greater desires, and if these are not fulfilled, they cause pain, which manifests as anger, irritability or even a physical disease. This type of transient pleasure is chosen by the individuals who attach themselves not only to the actions, but also to its results. The soul, which is an energized field of information and energy, is controlled by the person’s action, memory and desire. With every action, a memory is created which either gets stored or is recirculated again as an action. If one does not control the desires, the recurrent actions may cause more problems than happiness. ....read More

Drug patents: balancing innovation and access

livemint

Big pharma companies pour in billions of dollars in making new drugs. The patent system protects these drugs from being replicated by generic producers for some years. Making that patent period longer boosts innovation, but it also delays access to cheaper medicine. Does an optimal policy solution exist to balance both? A working paper by researcher Olena Izhak and others suggests that pharmaceutical patents should be made shorter in duration but broader in scope. Such a policy would allow companies to recover their research and development expenses and make profits without stalling the availability of generic drugs in the market for too long, the authors say. Shorter patents are those that last for lesser time, and broader scope generally means product patents are preferred over method patents.
