Handwashing with soap is crucial to fight against infectious diseases, including COVID-19, butmillions of people across the world do not have access to a hand washing facility, said UNICEF.

Latest estimates suggest that only 3 out of 5 people across the globe have basic handwashing facilities. Nearly 40% of the world’s population, i.e., around 3 billion people, do not have access to a handwashing facility with water and soap at home. Furthermore, 43% of schools do not have a handwashing facility with water and soap, which is estimated to impact around 818 million school-age children.

About three quarters of the people in the least developed nations do not have basic handwashing facilities at home. Additionally, in these least developed countries, 7 out of 10 schools have no place for children to wash their hands with water and soap… (UNICEF, October 14, 2020)
