New virus strain causing surge in cases across Europe

A coronavirus strain that emerged in Spain in June has spread across Europe and now makes up a large proportion of infections in several countries, researchers said, highlighting the role of travel in the pandemic and the need to track mutations. The variant 20A.EU1, which has not been found to be inherently more dangerous, was first identified among farm workers in the eastern Spanish regions of Aragon and Catalonia. Over the last two months, it has accounted for close to 90% of new infections in Spain, according to the research paper, authored by seven researchers with backing by Swiss and Spanish public-sector science institutions. It is yet to be peer reviewed. ....read more

Do Your Duty with Discipline and Devotion

“Vasudhaiva kutumbakam” (the whole world is one family) and “Ekam Sat Viprah Bahudavanti” (truth is one but the wise call it by various names) are two basic statements, which come from the ancient Rig Veda and form the fundamentals of Vedic philosophy. One should do one’s duty with devotion and discipline. This principle can be remembered as the principle of three Ds. In daily routine ‘one should remember the purpose for which one is born, which is to fulfil Dharma (duty), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire) and Moksha (liberation). To achieve them, one needs to follow the four Fs: (i) Follow the teacher; (ii) Face the negative devils of the mind; (iii) Fight till the end; and (iv) Finish at the goal. ....read more

Pharma data breaches should stop once data protection law comes into force

indialegallive

Three major cyber attacks in the Indian pharma industry in the last few months have left people wondering whether there is a pattern indicating the reason for this spurt. First was the Breach Candy Hospital one in February 2020 where over 121 million medical records were compromised. Of these, 120 million were images stored in the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine system consisting of X-rays, scan reports, etc. One million records contained Aadhaar information, medical history, etc. The data breach reportedly occurred because the access system of the hospital was compromised. Though this was an alarming data breach, the matter was hushed up and there was no apparent investigation by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) or any further announcements in the media. In October 2020, Dr Lal PathLabs reported a data breach of millions of records because their Cloud records reportedly did not have a password for access. Again, this was brushed under the carpet and no action was initiated by CERT-IN.
