Zinc Update: Role of Zinc in Inflammation and Infection

Zinc is an essential micronutrient, involved in the regulation of the innate and adaptive immune responses. Zinc is involved in the modulation of the proinflammatory response by targeting Nuclear Factor Kappa B (NF-κB), a transcription factor that is the master regulator of proinflammatory responses. It is also involved in controlling oxidative stress and regulating inflammatory cytokines. Zinc plays an intricate function during an immune response and its homeostasis is critical for sustaining proper immune function.

Achieving an optimal immune response to different stimuli and avoiding damage of tissues and organs is a delicate balance that relies, amongst other factors, on the regulation of zinc in extracellular and intracellular compartments. Resolving zinc deficiency and the adverse manifestations associated with it can be achieved through adequate diet and supplementation.
