Nagpur: NMC continues to count retest cases as fresh ones

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has continued to count Covid-19 positive patients multiple times if they test positive in retest. At the same time, names of some positive patients were not registered. These have led to wrong number of positive patients in the district and setback in contact tracing. One of the top police officer (48) had tested positive for novel coronavirus on November 15. His name was registered as positive case on the website of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and featured in the NMC’s daily list of positive cases on November 16. An analysis of serum from 141 pediatric patients who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 from March 19 through June 16, 2020, revealed that all but 1 of the 141 isolates (99.3%) had the D614G mutation in the spike protein. The prevalence of the mutation in February was around 10%, while it was about 65% in March, when the first peak was occurring in California. ....read more

Pune: Most Covid vaccine frontrunners have thrown up promising efficacy data. But it’s still unclear how long their protection will last. Health experts are debating the duration — some say its six months; others say it can be as long as nine months. But almost all agree its just too early to tell. Dr K Srinath Reddy, president of the Public Health Foundation of India, said since trials are still ongoing and given the fact the virus hasnt been around for long, it would be difficult to be certain about the duration of vaccine-induced immunity.

While everybody has probably heard of diabetes as a condition where the blood sugar levels are very high, very few people know that there are different types of diabetes. Today there are different types of diabetes which include type-1 diabetes which is insulin dependent and occurs usually in children, type-2 diabetes which comprises the vast majority of all forms of diabetes in the world (upto 90 - 95%) and several other forms like Gestational diabetes, Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY), Neonatal diabetes and genetic forms of diabetes. However the common garden variety of diabetes is what is called as type-2 diabetes. By default, whenever when one talks about diabetes, one is referring to type-2 diabetes. All guidelines for treatment of diabetes mention a common method of treating type-2 diabetes. In 2018, Dr. Leif Groop (Professor in Endocrinology at Lund University and Director of Lund University Diabetes Centre) and colleagues from Scandinavia showed that even among type-2 diabetes, there are several sub-types of diabetes. As multiple vaccines against COVID-19 gets ready to hit the market, concerns over a proper countrywide cold chain infrastructure for maintaining the integrity of these live/inactivated viruses or DNA/RNA genetic material have cropped up. But policymakers and public health professionals can probably learn a lesson or two here from the dairy industry. And no, it isn’t about low/sub-zero temperature transport and storage of milk, butter, curd or ice-cream, but about bull semen. Almost 8 crore artificial inseminations (AI) are performed annually in India. These AIs involve transport of semen, collected as raw ejaculate from elite bulls and packaged after freezing in vials or “straws”, for inserting into the reproductive tracts of cows and female buffaloes. This semen – originating from animals in 56 bull stations and used to inseminate female bovines belonging to farmers across the length and breadth of the country – is preserved throughout its journey at minus 196 degrees Celsius. This is way lower than the minus 20 to minus 70 degree requirements of the Moderna and Pfizer Covid vaccines!

More than half of men, and nearly two thirds of women currently aged 20 years in India could develop diabetes in their life time, with most of those cases likely to be type 2 diabetes, according to a new study. The research, published in the journal Diabetologia, estimated the probability of a metropolitan Indian of any age or body mass index (BMI) developing diabetes in their lifetime. According to the scientists, including those from the Centre for Chronic Disease Control (CCDC) in New Delhi, the country already has a significant health burden caused by diabetes with more than 77 million adults currently afflicted by the condition, and the number expected to almost double to 134 million by 2045.
