Hunt on for lead source that may have caused Andhra Pradesh mystery illness

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government will begin an operation to look for possible sources of contamination that could have led to the mystery disease in Eluru town of the state that has left nearly 600 people ill and one dead. AP health authorities said lead and pesticides, along with other probable sources, are being looked into as possible cause of the illness. AP health commissioner K Bhaskar said vegetables, fruits, soil and all other probable sources are being examined. Bhaskar said the mass convulsions and the subsequent decrease of lead content in the blood of patients after being admitted indicate it’s a case of acute exposure and not chronic exposure. ....read more

1190: India may become the first country in the world to have emergency use approval of three vaccines: Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech filed an application for emergency use authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine – Covaxin - on Monday, becoming the third company to seek such regulatory approval in the country after Pfizer and Serum Institute of India (SII). While Pfizer has offered its vaccine, which has been developed in association with German firm BioNTech, SII has sought the approval for Covishield, developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca. SII has conducted only bridging studies in India but is manufacturing the vaccine. The DCGI will decide whether Pfizer needs to conduct bridging studies here. One person has died and nearly 600 have been hospitalised since Saturday in Andhra Pradesh due to a mysterious infection that caused many to fall unconscious after suffering giddiness, seizures and nausea. The first patients were admitted to hospital on Saturday at Eluru in West Godavari of Andhra Pradesh. By Sunday, according to the Union health ministry, there were more than 200 people hospitalised, suffering dizziness, headache and vomiting. Patients including children and women fainted, and that evening a 45-year-old man died.

Gennova Biopharmaceuticals granted conditional permission for human clinical trial of its Covid-19 vaccine

NEW DELHI: The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on Wednesday granted conditional permission for phases 1 and 2 human clinical trials of the Covid-19 vaccine candidate developed by the Pune-based Gennova Biopharmaceuticals Ltd in collaboration with HDT, USA, officials said. The recommendations of the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) on Covid-19, which deliberated upon the proposal submitted by the firm for grant of permission to conduct phases 1 and 2 clinical trials along with animal toxicity study data, has been approved by DCGI. "After detailed deliberation, the committee recommended for grant of permission to conduct phase 1 and 2 clinical trial subject to the condition that the interim results of phase 1 study shall be submitted to the committee before proceeding to the next phase," the SEC recommendations stated.

Indian researchers find new potential COVID-19 drug treatments

Indian scientists have identified drugs and possible cocktails that can target vital proteins of the novel coronavirus, and may potentially help treat COVID-19. Using a virtual screening of the DrugBank database, the research published in the journal Scientific Reports, identified a variety of unexplored ways to attack SARS-CoV-2, even as it mutates. The Drugbank database is a chemical space of compounds approved by FDA and molecules under drug trials. The researchers from Alagappa University in Tamil Nadu and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden propose a list of individual drugs and cocktails that deserve testing for the treatment of COVID-19.

Doctor, fashion designer among people who join farmers protests

New Delhi [INDIA], December 7 (ANI): A doctor and a fashion designer are among the people from different professions who joined the farmers protest at the Singhu border on Monday. Remembering her agricultural background, Dr Harkanwal Sinkhon said, "It does not matter what your profession is. Right now, we all belong to farmers family. I am here so that I can put forward my voice for people of my state." Denying any political agenda the doctor said the protest was about farmers rights.
