South Africa targets COVID-19 vaccines next month

South Africa intends to get COVID-19 vaccines by next month; however, it is still in talks with pharmaceutical companies and no deals are finalized yet, stated Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.

The country is currently fighting a resurgence in COVID-19 infections, driven in part by a new variant termed 501.V2. The country has recorded over 1 million infections, the most on the African continent, and over 29,000 deaths. In an opinion piece published in major local news outlets, health experts criticized the government for being slow to procure sufficient vaccines. The country is participating in the COVAX vaccine distribution initiative, co-led by the World Health Organization. The initiative could; however, only cover 10% of its population and the first doses may only arrive in the second quarter of the year. The Health Minister stated that the officials were doing everything possible to procure the vaccines before the COVAX doses become available… (Reuters, January 4, 2021)
