In a 1st, NIV-Pune isolates, cultures Covids UK variant

NEW DELHI: In a first, Punes National Institute of Virology (NIV) has isolated and cultured the new UK variant of SARS-CoV2, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said on Saturday underlining that no other country has so far reported isolation and culture of the latest UK strain. "UK-variant of the virus, with all signature changes, is now successfully isolated and cultured at National Institute of Virology (NIV) from the clinical specimens collected from UK-returnees," ICMR said. Indias 1st Covid-19 vaccines: DCGI approves Serum, Bharat Biotech vaccines for emergency use

NEW DELHI : The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on Sunday approved the Oxford coronavirus vaccine and Bharat Biotechs Covaxin, making it Indias first vaccines against the pandemic. DCGI VG Somani said both the drug firms have submitted data on their trial runs and both have been granted permission for "restricted use".

The Hindustan Syringes and Medical Devices (HMD) receives the WHO- Performance, Quality and Safety (PQS) certification for its 0.3 ml Kojak AD Syringes, which are mainly required for the Pfizer’s Corona vaccine. The company is also ramping up its production capacity of 0.5 ml Kojak AD (Auto disposal) syringe. Commenting on the WHO-PQS Certification, “Rajiv Nath, Managing Director, Hindustan Syringes and Medical Devices, said, “On December 31, 2020, we got the WHO- PQS certification for our 0.3 ml Kojak AD Syringes. This is required for Pfizer’s vaccine and we started developing in November on request of PATH and UNICEF. The standard AD 0.5 ml syringes could not be used to inject this vaccine. We have already informed the Government of India about its crucial availability without which public healthcare safe injection delivery of Pfizer vaccine is not possible. And next week, we expect to get orders from UNICEF also.”

Drug regulator gives final approval for Covid-19 vaccines of SII, Bharat Biotech

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on Sunday formally announced the final approval for Oxford-AstraZeneca and Bharat Biotech vaccines against the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) vaccines for emergency use. “CDSCO (Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation) accepts the subject expert committee reform rations on Serum and Bharat Biotech Covid vaccines,” DCGI VG Somani said in a press conference. The subject expert committee (SEC) under CDSCO had recommended Oxford-AstraZeneca’s vaccine, which is being manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII) as Covishield, for emergency use and Covaxin for restricted use. Covaxin is the indigenous vaccine being developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) on Sunday approved the emergency use of both Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin for immunisation against Covid-19 in India. Addressing the media, the DCGI said, “After adequate examination, CDSCO has decided to accept the recommendations of the Expert Committee and accordingly, vaccines of Serum Institute and Bharat Biotech are being approved for restricted use in emergency situation and permission is being granted to Cadila Healthcare for the conduct of Phase III clinical trial.” On January 1, Covishield was recommended for emergency use whereas Covaxin was recommended for restricted use on January 2.
