Third COVID-19 vaccine approved in the UK

Prime Minister Boris Johnson called it "excellent news" as a third COVID-19 vaccine was approved for use in the UK.

Made by US company Moderna, the vaccine works in a similar way to the Pfizer vaccine already being offered on the NHS. The UK has pre-ordered 17 million doses of the Moderna vaccine; however, the supplies may not arrive until spring.

Nearly 1.5 million people in the UK have already had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine thus far, with either the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines that have already been approved by UK regulators. The Prime Minister has said that their aim is to inoculate 15 million people in the UK by mid-February, which will include care homes residents and staff, frontline NHS staff, everyone above 70 years of age, and those who are clinically highly vulnerable… (BBC, January 8, 2021)
