India launches COVID-19 vaccination campaign, sanitation worker gets first shot

Sanitation worker Manish Kumar was the first in India to receive vaccination against COVID-19 on Saturday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched one of the world’s largest COVID-19 immunization campaigns.

Modi stated, “The disease separated people from their families, kept mothers away from their children, and those who died of the disease couldn’t even get a final goodbye from their families.”

Kumar was administered the vaccine at Delhi’s All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), which is one of the 3,006 vaccination centers established across the country. On the first day of the immunization campaign, the country aimed to vaccinate nearly 300,600 people… (Reuters, January 16, 2021)
