South African Virus Strain 50% More Contagious

A new variant of the coronavirus that was first detected in South Africa is more transmissible in comparison with previous versions, stated experts, though there is no evidence to state that this variant is more fatal.

Epidemiologist Professor Salim Abdool Karim, co-chair of the health ministrys scientific committee, mentioned that the new variant is 50% more contagious, adding that there is no evidence to indicate that it is more severe than the original one. With over 1.3 million people infected with COVID-19, the country has recorded more cases than any other country on the continent. It has also reported more deaths, with 37,105 fatalities recorded.
