New coronavirus variant might partially elude protection from vaccines or previous infection

According to a new study, an individual might get infected with one of the new variants of the coronavirus even if theyve had COVID-19 infection before or have received vaccination against the disease.

The variant, first detected in South Africa in October, has now spread to more than a dozen countries.

Penny Moore, associate professor at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases in South Africa and the senior author of the study said that there was reason to be alarmed. Based on the data, it seems probable that the vaccine will be some what less effective, stated David Montefiori, a virologist at Duke University Medical Center.
