Abbott's COVID-19 antigen test may aid faster detection, says CDC

It is highly likely that the rapid COVID-19 antigen test by Abbott Laboratories will correctly identify if people have ever contracted the coronavirus and could also help with earlier isolation, stated the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Although the test was found to be less sensitive when it comes to detecting asymptomatic infection, but the faster turnaround time could help in restricting transmission by more rapid detection of infectious persons for isolation, noted CDC. In comparison with the RT-PCR test, Abbott’s antigen test was shown to have a sensitivity of 64.2% for samples from symptomatic individuals and only 35.8% for samples from asymptomatic people. The specificity of the test was close to 100% in specimens obtained from both groups, which indicates very few false positives and no false negatives… (Reuters, January 20, 2021)
