WHO: Africa at risk due to COVID-19 vaccine hoarding

While countries in other regions of the world enter into bilateral deals, raising the prices, Africa is facing the risk of being left behind in the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, cautioned the World Health Organization (WHO).

Vaccines have been administered in 50 of the more affluent countries, while Guinea is the only low-income country in Africa to have received the vaccine doses, and having vaccinated just 25 individuals thus far. Seychelles is the sole country in Africa to begin a national vaccination campaign. Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa, said that the only way to bring the pandemic to an end is by the approach of ‘We first, not me first’… (UN, January 21, 2021)
