First Cases of South Africa Coronavirus Variant Detected in US

A variant of the coronavirus, first detected in South Africa, has now been detected for the first time in US in two adults who have no travel history and are not connected to each other, reported officials on Thursday.

The cases have been detected in the state of South Carolina. The B.1.351 variant has been found in over 30 countries and scientists had expected that it could already be there in the US. Evidence available does not suggest yet that B.1.351 variant is associated with more severe disease compared to the more common strains of the virus; however, the higher infection rate associated with this variant may possibly increase the rate of hospitalizations and deaths… (NDTV - Agence France-Presse, January 28, 2021)
