Dietary intake which is influenced by eating behaviour determines the nutritional status of patients after liver transplantation. Evidence based observations suggested that malnutrition declines remarkably after liver transplantation. It has been reported that weight lost during liver disease is recovered within 1 year and recipients of liver transplantation gain weight up to the second or third year and sometimes, likely to being overweight and obese. However, muscle mass may not recover entirely, which results in the increase of sarcopenia within 1 year post liver transplantation. Hence, certain researches have provided evidence that alteration of food intake before and after liver transplantation can offer some benefits.

The results of nutritional interventions caused a positive energy balance in the first year, and a greater energy intake along time after liver transplantation. However, these data are controversial as dietary survey methods were unable to assess eating behaviour and some authors even reported potential underreporting of actual results, especially among people overweight/obese. Moreover, weight gain and obesity were found to be associated with higher scores for patterns of eating behaviors after liver transplantation. Starving or deprivation of food in the pre-transplantation period, and psychological factors were observed to impact eating behavior and which in turn affected calorie intake and nutritional status of liver transplantation patients.

Thus, elucidation of eating behavior after liver transplantation is essential to determine dietary intake and its consequences on nutritional modifications required for recipients of liver transplantation.
