Sputnik V Vaccine 91.6% Effective in Studies

Phase III clinical trials with the Russian Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine suggest that it is 91.6% effective in fighting COVID-19, reveals research published in The Lancet.

There were nearly 20,000 individuals in the trials. Sixteen COVID cases were observed in the 14,964 individuals who were given the vaccine (0.1%) compared to 62 cases in the 4,902 subjects given placebo (1.3%), noted study authors.

However, the study has limitations. The efficacy analysis involves only symptomatic cases of COVID-19. There is a need to assess the vaccine’s efficacy in asymptomatic COVID-19 disease and its transmission.

Additionally, the median follow-up duration was 48 days from the first dose; hence, the study cannot determine the complete duration of protection… (Medscape)
