Slower COVID Spread in Asia may be related to a Protein

A study conducted by Indian scientists has suggested that deficiency of a protein in the Caucasians may be the reason behind Europe and North America being more vulnerable to the spread of a coronavirus variant, in comparison with Asian countries.

Researchers investigated the global spread of the variant carrying the D614G mutation, the predominant strain affecting North America and Europe. It has been reported that a deficiency of the protein alpha-anti-trypsin (AAT) among the European and North American populations is among the major factors that account for the rapid spread of this variant across the two continents compared to Asia. Researchers noted that the variant took 5.5 months to attain a 50% relative frequency in East Asia, compared to 2.15 months in Europe, and 2.83 months in North America… (NDTV – PTI, February 10, 2021)
