Alcohol, Drugs and Smoking Tied to Early Heart Disease

Recreational substance use has been found to be tied to early-onsetatherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in a new study, with the risk beingparticularly high among women.

Independent predictors of premature ASCVD (a first event before 55 yearsof age among men and before 65 years of age among women) included tobacco use(adjusted OR 1.97), alcohol use (adjusted OR 1.50), use of cocaine (adjusted OR2.44), use of amphetamine (adjusted OR 2.74), cannabis use (adjusted OR 2.65),and other drug use (adjusted OR 2.53).

A similar link was evident for recreational use of these substances withthe development of extremely premature ASCVD, i.e., first event before the ageof 40 years, noted researchers. The findings are published in the journal Heart… (Medpage Today)
